Turn a Pet Photo Into a Painting: How It Works & What It Costs
By Animal Heroes World · Updated · 9 min read
To turn a pet photo into a painting, upload a clear, eye-level photo to a portrait service, pick a painting style, check the preview and order it on canvas or paper; or hire a painter if you want a hand-painted original and can wait. That's the short answer. This guide is the long one: how each route works, what it really costs in money and time, and exactly how our own portraits are made, step by step, with nothing hidden. You'll also learn which photos paint well, how to pick a style and format, and the mistakes that turn a lovely idea into a disappointing print.
What are your options for turning a pet photo into a painting?
When you search for a way to turn pet photo into painting, you'll find three realistic routes, and each suits a different person. None of them is wrong; they simply trade time, money and control differently. A useful way to decide is to ask what you care about most: speed, a hand-made original, or seeing the finished piece before you pay.
DIY apps and filters. Many photo apps have an oil or watercolor effect. It's instant and free or cheap, but most filters lay texture over the photo rather than repainting it, so the result tends to look like a filtered snapshot. Files are often too small to print well, and you still have to find a printer.
Commissioning a painter. An artist paints your pet by hand in oil, acrylic or watercolor. You get a true one-of-a-kind original with real brushstrokes. It costs considerably more than a print and usually takes weeks, longer before the holidays, and big changes are hard once paint is on the canvas.
A portrait service with a preview. You upload a photo, choose a style and see the finished painting before paying. That's how ours works, and the rest of this guide explains it in detail.
Turn pet photo into painting options: DIY vs. a painter vs. us
Here's how the three pet photo to painting routes compare side by side. Prices for the DIY and commission columns vary too much to quote fairly, so we only give numbers for our own portraits, taken straight from our catalog.
| DIY app or filter | Commissioned painter | Animal Heroes Art | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time to see it | Instant | Sketch or progress photo after days to weeks | Free preview in seconds |
| Time to your wall | Depends on where you print | Usually several weeks or more | 2–4 business days to make, 3–5 to ship |
| Cost | Free to low, plus printing | The highest of the three | Digital $29.99, print $39.99–$99.99, canvas $89.99–$239.99 |
| Control before paying | Full, but limited tools | Limited revisions | Retry, change style or photo, edit name and background |
| Result | Often a filtered photo; may print soft | Hand-painted original | Digital painting printed on canvas or fine-art paper |
How we turn your pet photo into a painting
We want to be transparent about this. Our portraits are painted digitally from your photo with our image tools, in a style designed to look like a real painting: soft watercolor washes with paper texture for the Modern portrait, or rich oil looks for royal and character styles. Your pet's own face, markings and eye color come from your picture.
Because the painting is digital, you see a free preview in seconds instead of waiting for a sketch. If something is off, you can try again or use a different photo before you spend a cent. When you order, the final artwork is rendered again at full print detail, and only then printed in the USA on canvas or 189 gsm fine-art paper and shipped to you.
Previews render quickly so you never wait long at the screen; the paid order is where the extra detail goes. That's also why the preview can look a touch softer than the print you receive. If a choice looks wrong in the preview, though, it will be wrong in the print too, so that's the moment to fix it.
So you're buying a printed reproduction of a digital painting, not a brush-on-canvas original. If an original with real paint matters most to you, a traditional commission is the right choice, and it's worth the extra time and cost. If you want a painting of your pet that looks like them, that you approve before paying and that arrives in about a week or two, ours is built for that.

Design yoursHow to turn my dog photo into a painting, step by step
The flow is the same for dogs, cats and every other pet. It takes a few minutes, and nothing is charged until you check out.
Step 1: Photo and size
Upload your pet's photo, crop it if your pet is small in the frame, and choose how many pets will be in the painting, from one to four (extra pets are $15 each and can come from separate photos). Pick a digital file, art print or canvas and a size. Painting starts the moment the photo is in. Buying a surprise? Choose Send photo later and we'll email an upload link.
Step 2: Personalize
Add your pet's name and an optional second line, like a birthday or the years for a memorial. Choose the lettering and name color, a background, and your framing. Everything updates live on the painting.
Step 3: Review
You see the finished product with every choice listed and a Change link beside each. Look closely at the eyes, ears and markings, fix anything, then add it to your cart.
Step 4: Order
Add any extras in the cart, like a matching greeting card or sticker, and check out. Bundles save 15% on two items, 20% on three and 25% on five or more, and every order has a 30-day money-back guarantee.
What makes a pet photo paint well?
Any painter, human or digital, can only paint what's in the picture. A sharp photo gives a painting that looks like your pet; a blurry one gives a painting of a pet who looks a bit like yours. You don't need a professional camera. You need four things:
- Soft daylight near a window, no flash, so the fur color is true and the eyes don't glow.
- Eye level, kneeling or sitting on the floor, so the head and body keep natural proportions.
- Sharp eyes: tap to focus on them. They're the first thing anyone looks at in a painting.
- The whole head in frame, both ears included, facing the camera or turned slightly.
Old photos and pets who have passed
An older or imperfect photo is often still usable. Pick the sharpest one, crop close to the face, and try a forgiving style like watercolor, which doesn't depend on every whisker. Our guide to taking pet pictures has fixes for black fur, white fur, puppies and wriggly cats.
Choosing a painting style for your pet
Style shapes the whole feeling of the piece, so start with the room and the personality rather than the trend. A few quick rules of thumb:
- Watercolor for light walls, nurseries, bedrooms and tender gifts. It's what our Modern Custom Pet Portrait is painted in, with your pet's name above. See the watercolor style.
- Oil-painting character looks like The King, Renaissance Noble or The Admiral for living rooms, studies and anyone with a sense of humor. They're on the Character Pet Portrait.
- Pop art and cartoon for modern spaces, kids' rooms and gifts that should make people laugh.
- Angel for a gentle memorial with soft wings and golden light.

Our pet portraits guide walks through every style family with ideas by room and occasion, and dog portrait painting explains what makes an oil or watercolor look convincing, from lighting to brushwork to backgrounds.
Photo to canvas painting of a pet: which format?
Once the painting looks right, the format decides how it lives on the wall. For the Modern portrait, here's what each one costs and suits:
- Canvas, $89.99–$239.99 (8×10 to 24×36): hand-stretched on 1.25-inch pine bars and ready to hang. The woven surface catches light like a real painting, with no glass to glare. Add a floating frame in black, walnut or white for $29.99–$94.99.
- Fine-art print, $39.99–$99.99: 189 gsm enhanced matte paper, the natural home for watercolor and the affordable way to go big. A solid wood frame in black, natural oak or white with a shatterproof front adds $35–$100.
- Digital download, $29.99: a high-res file by email, for printing yourself or sharing online.
Which size?
An 8×10 suits a desk or shelf, 12×16 a hallway or bedroom, 16×20 a focal point on a medium wall, and 18×24 or 24×36 the space over a sofa or bed. When in doubt, go one size up; small art on a big wall looks lost. Our custom pet canvas guide covers hanging and edges.
Common mistakes when you turn a photo into a painting
Most disappointing pet paintings come from a handful of avoidable slips. Watch for these:
- Choosing the cutest photo instead of the clearest. A blurry favorite loses to a sharp, ordinary one every time.
- Using a photo taken from above. The painting inherits the big head and tiny body.
- Skimming the preview. Check eye color, ear shape and any distinctive marking before you order, and retry if one is wrong.
- Printing a filter app's file at canvas size. Low-resolution exports go soft and blocky when enlarged.
- Going too small. An 8×10 over a sofa reads as a photo, not a painting.
- Leaving a holiday gift too late. Hand-painted commissions can book up weeks ahead; with us, order by December 10 for delivery before Christmas in the continental US.
Getting a custom painting from a photo as a gift
A painting of their own pet is something people rarely buy for themselves, which is what makes it such a good present. Pick a style that matches their home, and if you can't get a photo without spoiling the surprise, use Send photo later and approve the preview once the photo arrives.
Enter the recipient's address at checkout to ship it straight to them; packing slips never show prices. The same painting can also go on a mug, blanket or ornament, and 10% of every order goes, in full, to animal rescue.
