A pet memorial canvas is a painted portrait of the animal you lost, made from a favorite photo and printed on canvas so it can hang where they used to be part of every day. It doesn't replace them, and it isn't meant to. What it does is give your eyes somewhere to land: their face, their name, the years you had together. This guide walks through how to choose the style, the photo, the words and the size, gently and at your own pace.

What can a pet memorial be?

A pet memorial is anything that gives your love for them a place to live now that they're gone. There's no right form, and many people end up with a mix of small things rather than one big gesture.

  • A memory corner. A shelf or windowsill with their collar, a favorite toy, a candle and a framed portrait. It becomes the spot you pause at on the way past.
  • A portrait. A painting of their face, often with their name, that hangs on the wall or stands on a mantel. This is the piece people tend to keep for decades.
  • A ritual. Walking their old route on their birthday, lighting a candle on the anniversary, hanging an ornament with their name every December.
  • Something shared. A copy of their picture for the kids' rooms, a card to the vet who cared for them, a donation to a rescue in their name.

Why a pet memorial canvas lasts

Photos live in phones, and phones get replaced. A canvas is physical: it's there when you come home, it's there when guests ask about the dog in the painting, and it gives you a reason to say their name out loud. Over time, many people find that the portrait shifts from something that makes them cry to something that makes them smile.

A painted portrait also softens the photo in a way that suits remembering. A watercolor brings out the expression and the markings you know by heart, without the clutter of the background or the bad lighting of the day it was taken. Canvas adds texture and depth, so it reads as art rather than a snapshot.

Ours are printed on canvas hand-stretched over 1.25" pine bars and arrive ready to hang, so there's nothing to assemble on a day when you may not have much energy for it.

Choosing a style for a memorial portrait

Most people lean toward something calm and gentle, though there's no rule. Three directions tend to feel right:

Soft watercolor with a rainbow

Our Modern watercolor portrait paints your pet in soft washes with their name on top. Choose the Rainbow backdrop and a pastel rainbow arches behind them, just under the name, a quiet nod to the rainbow bridge. White, cream, blush, sage and charcoal backdrops are there too if a rainbow feels like too much.

Forever in My Heart

The angel style paints your pet with soft wings and a subtle golden halo, resting on clouds in warm light. It's made for remembrance and is found under the Character Pet Portrait.

Their everyday personality

Some families want them exactly as they were: the goofy one, the regal one, the one who thought they ran the house. A plain backdrop with their name, or even a royal portrait if that was their spirit, can feel more like them than anything solemn.

Choosing the photo of a pet who has passed

You may not have a perfect picture, and that's okay. The portrait needs a clear view of the face more than anything else. If both eyes and the shape of the muzzle are visible, the art can usually do the rest.

Older photos and phone snaps from years ago often work well. You can crop to just their face when you upload, so a corner of a family photo is fine. Then pick the age you want to remember: some people choose their pet in their prime, others the gray-muzzled senior they said goodbye to. Neither is wrong.

Because the preview is free and takes seconds, you can try two or three photos and see which feels most like them before you decide anything. Our guide to turning a pet photo into a painting has more photo tips, and if two pets were inseparable, each extra pet in the same portrait is $15.

What to write on a pet memorial canvas

The pet's name prints on the portrait in your choice of Classic, Elegant or Handwritten lettering, in black, white, gold, red or green. Below it there's an optional second line of up to 28 characters. A few ideas that fit:

  • Name and years: "2010 – 2025" under "Max"
  • A short tribute: "Forever in our hearts", "Always by my side"
  • Something only they were: "Best boy", "Queen of the couch"
  • A rescue story: "Adopted 2014 · Loved always"
  • From the family: "Forever one of the Garcias"

Canvas vs art print vs framed: which should you choose?

Every format uses the same portrait, so the choice comes down to the look and the budget. Canvas looks like a painting and hangs without a frame. An art print on 189 gsm matte paper is the most affordable way to go large. Either can have a solid wood frame added and arrives ready to hang.

What size pet memorial canvas fits your space?

Think about where you'll see it most, then size for that spot. Prices below are for canvas; art prints in the same sizes cost less.

  • 8×10 ($89.99): a shelf, nightstand or memory corner, propped against the wall beside a candle or their collar.
  • 12×16 ($119.99): a mantel or a dresser top, or a small wall between windows.
  • 16×20 ($149.99): a classic size above a side table or desk, easy to see from across a room.
  • 18×24 ($179.99): a hallway or bedroom wall where it hangs on its own.
  • 24×36 ($239.99): above a sofa, bed or fireplace, the size that makes it the room's focal point.

Where to hang a pet memorial portrait

Many people choose the place the pet loved: above the spot where their bed was, near the door they waited by, or in the room where the family gathers. Hang it with the center about 57 inches from the floor, the usual eye level, or a little lower above furniture so it relates to the piece below.

If seeing them every morning feels too raw right now, a smaller print in a quieter spot is a fine place to start. You can always move it later, or add a larger canvas when you're ready.

A custom pet portrait from a photo as a memorial gift

When a friend or family member loses a pet, a custom pet portrait from a photo is one of the few gifts that says "I know they mattered" without needing many words. It works best when the practical side is easy for them.

At checkout, enter their address. The order ships straight to their door, packing slips never show prices, and they never see a receipt. If you don't have a good photo, choose send photo later: we email you an upload link, so you can quietly ask a family member for a favorite, and you still see the preview before anything is printed.

A modest size is usually kinder than a huge one, since it doesn't ask them to rearrange a room. An 8×10 or 12×16 canvas or a framed print is easy to place. For more ideas, see our pet memorial gifts and dog memorial gifts guides.

A digital file to share with the whole family

Grief is often shared across a family: grown children in other states, a partner who travels, grandparents who loved the dog too. The digital download ($29.99) is a high-res file of the portrait, emailed within one business day, that everyone can keep on their phone or print at home.

If you're ordering a canvas or print, you can add the high-res digital file for $9.99, so you have both the wall piece and a copy to send around.

When to order, and Christmas timing

There's no rush. Some people want a portrait within days; others need months before they can look through the photos. A canvas that arrives on their birthday or the anniversary of the day they came home can be just as meaningful as one that arrives right away.

Canvases and prints are made in 2–4 business days and arrive 3–5 business days later. If you'd like it before Christmas, order by December 10 for delivery in the continental US. The first holiday without them is often the hardest, and a small custom ornament with their name ($29.99) is a gentle way to keep them on the tree.
