Dog Birthday Gift Ideas: 24 Picks for Dogs & Their Owners

Two kinds of dog birthday gifts

When you buy a birthday gift for a dog, you're really buying for two recipients. The dog values experiences: smells, play, food and time with their people. The owner values memories: proof of how small the puppy once was, how distinguished the old boy became, how much fun the party was. The best birthday plans include a little of both — something to enjoy on the day, and something to keep.

If you're a guest at a dog's birthday party or buying for a friend's dog, a gift for the owner is often the more thoughtful choice. Most dogs already have a basket of toys; very few owners have a portrait of their dog on the wall.

Birthday gifts for the dog

Things the birthday dog will genuinely enjoy:

• 1. A durable new toy — choose one sized for the dog's jaw and chewing style; tough chewers need sturdier toys.
• 2. A snuffle mat or puzzle feeder — sniffing is mentally tiring in the best way, and great for rainy days.
• 3. A dog-safe birthday 'pupcake' — many pet bakeries make them, or bake one with plain pumpkin, peanut butter without xylitol and oat flour. Ask your vet if your dog has allergies or a sensitive stomach.
• 4. A 'sniffari' — a slow walk somewhere new where the dog leads and sniffs as much as it likes.
• 5. A playdate with a favorite dog friend at a park or in a fenced yard.
• 6. A new collar or bandana — a birthday bandana makes for very good photos.
• 7. A cozy new bed for senior dogs whose joints appreciate extra support.

Personalized birthday gifts for the dog's owner

These are the gifts that outlast the party. Each one is made from a photo of the dog, so it's specific to them — and the birthday is a perfect excuse to take a fresh photo.

Milestone birthdays deserve a portrait

Some birthdays are bigger than others. The first birthday marks the end of puppyhood. The tenth (or the seventh, for giant breeds) usually means a dog is entering its senior years. Some owners celebrate a 'sweet 16' with a small dog or a cat. These are the moments when a portrait for the wall makes the most sense.

For a fun portrait, the Character Pet Portrait turns the dog into a king, queen, admiral, general, astronaut or superhero. For something timeless, the Modern Custom Pet Portrait is a soft watercolor with the dog's name on top. Both come as a canvas (from $89.99), an art print (from $39.99) or a digital download, with optional wood frames.

Gotcha day gift ideas

Many rescue dogs don't have a known birthday, so families celebrate their gotcha day — the day the dog came home. It's an especially meaningful anniversary because it marks the start of the relationship. Gotcha day gifts can be the same as birthday gifts, but a few ideas fit it perfectly:

• 17. A 'then and now' pair of prints — the adoption-day photo and a current one, framed side by side.
• 18. A gotcha day ornament — with "Home since 2022" in the name line, so it comes out every Christmas.
• 19. A donation to the rescue the dog came from, in the dog's name.
• 20. A blanket for the dog's favorite sofa spot, with its portrait — from $99.99.

Dog birthday party ideas (safe and simple)

A dog birthday party doesn't have to be big to be fun. Most dogs prefer a small gathering of familiar people and dogs to a crowd. Keep it outdoors or in a space with room to move, provide plenty of water, and give dogs a quiet place to retreat if they get overwhelmed.

Keep food safe: no chocolate, xylitol (a sweetener found in some peanut butters and baked goods), grapes, raisins, onions or macadamia nuts, and keep human party food out of reach. Party hats and bandanas are fine for a photo if the dog is comfortable — take them off if they paw at them. For the human side, matching tees and a portrait mug for each guest who loves the dog can be a fun party favor.

Birthday gifts by budget

A quick guide if you need something for the owner:

• 21. Under $30 — a personalized ornament ($29.99), a digital portrait (from $29.99) or a mug ($29.99).
• 22. $30–$75 — pet face socks, a birthday tee, kids' tee, tote bag, phone case, pillow, puzzle, hoodie or tumbler.
• 23. $75–$150 — a framed print, a 12″ × 16″ or 16″ × 20″ canvas, or a sherpa blanket.
• 24. Big milestone — a large canvas (18″ × 24″ or 24″ × 36″) with a floating frame.

How to get a great birthday photo

Birthday photos often double as the source for a portrait, so it's worth getting a good one. Shoot in daylight, ideally outdoors in open shade or near a bright window. Get down to the dog's eye level, hold a treat just above the phone to bring the ears up, and take a burst. Make sure both ears and the whole face are visible, and avoid flash. If you want the party hat in the portrait, take a second photo without it — clean face photos usually give the best artwork. More tips in our photo guide.

Ordering in time for the big day

Personalized items are made to order: production typically takes 2–4 business days and US delivery about 3–5 business days. Plan to order about two weeks before the birthday. If the birthday is tomorrow, a digital portrait is delivered by email and can be printed or shared right away.

US shipping is free on orders over $75, and ordering several items — say, a canvas for the owner and party tees for the family — saves automatically: 15% on two items, 20% on three and 25% on five or more.
